Never ever ever give up

I had the great fortune of interviewing Layne Beachley onstage at the Melbourne Business Chicks brekky last week. I am a massive fan of hers for too many reasons to mention here. In short, she’s one of the most generous, spirited, hard working and funny people you’ll ever meet.
At one point in the interview she spoke about how hard it had been to fight for equal rights for the girls in the surf. It was just accepted that the guys would get the better waves, while the women were relegated to whatever was left. Layne had to continuously ask for a fair go for the women, and never gave up in her quest to level the playing field.
Tenacity and not backing down has also served me well over the years. Poor Li Cunxin (from Mao’s Last Dancer) got harassed by me at least ten times to come speak with Business Chicks. On nine occasions I got a no. But….on that tenth time? I got a yes.
Two of my all time fave quotes relate to this. Thomas Edison said “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”
And who hasn’t referred to this one by Winston Churchill when the going has gotten tough? “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.”
What you don’t ask for you don’t get. And sometimes it takes asking nine times. Tenacity, determination (and a little bit of charm) can get you a lot of places.
I’d love to hear about a time you’ve persisted and gotten what you wanted.
